About the WHO Global Observatory on Health Research and Development (R&D)

What does the WHO Global Observatory on Health Research and Development (R&D) do?

The WHO Global Observatory on Health R&D (the "R&D Observatory") provides a centralized and comprehensive source of data on what health R&D is being conducted globally, where it is being conducted, by whom and how, and to facilitate the development of standards for data collection and analysis in this area.

What is the goal of the R&D Observatory?

By making data on health R&D publicly accessible, the goal of R&D Observatory is to facilitate the setting of priorities for new research investments based on public health needs and to support countries' health research capacity strengthening efforts.

What is the scope of the R&D Observatory?

The R&D Observatory adheres to a broad definition of health R&D, including all types of research for health (for more information about WHO's definitions in the area of research, see the WHO strategy on research for health). Since informing the development of new health products has triggered the establishment of the R&D Observatory, many of its initial data sources support this goal; as more data and resources become available its focus will be expanded to include all types of research for health.

What are the sources of the R&D Observatory data?

The R&D Observatory brings together information from a wide range of data sources. These data are often provided to WHO by external data sources (see the User Guide of the Global Observatory on Health R&D). Therefore, the data on this platform cannot be interpreted as official WHO data and, as further detailed in the Terms and Conditions of Use for the Global Observatory on Health R&D, WHO disclaims all responsibility for, and accuracy of, such external data.

Does the R&D Observatory make all its data publicly accessible?

The R&D Observatory intends to be an open data platform and, to the extent possible, makes all the data that it collects and analyses of those data openly and freely accessible to the public. All use of the R&D Observatory is subject to the Terms and Conditions of Use.

Where can I find additional information about the R&D Observatory?

The User Guide of the Global Observatory on Health R&D describes important considerations around the data that are included in the Observatory and will be updated regularly as new sources and functionality are added.

The Terms and Conditions of Use for the Global Observatory on Health R&D govern all use of the Observatory and WHO recommends all users review and confirm their understanding of them prior to any use.
